Brilliant Bubbles on the Beach

I’m the new kid around here and I nearly missed this event again this year! Fortunately I’ve met a few distinctive foodie friends who assured me that NOT going would be a tragic oversight. Not really knowing what to expect, I ordered the tickets from the Beach Club Resort and looked forward to an evening out. That alone was enough to motivate me, a kid-less event, wheee…you mean I get to talk to ‘grown-ups’ !? It also gave me an excuse to buy a new pair of shoes, NOT that I needed an excuse, but they are stunners…

When we first visited the Island last spring, scouting, house and job hunting, we came to the Beach Club for dinner. My hubby’s prospective new employer treated us to a lovely evening of divine beach views, mouth-watering seafood and sensational wine. Truly was the perfect introduction to Parksville. ‘Bubbles on the Beach’ just celebrated it’s fourth fabulous year. The final long weekend of summer has developed into a celebration for the resort, the staff and all of the wineries and food vendors involved. After a busy tourist season, the general manager of the Beach Club Shawna Broekhuizen, feels they provide an exciting opportunity for all of the vendors to showcase their products, applaud each others season and share the local bounty with appreciative guests from near and far!

The entire outside patio of the Pacific Prime Steak and Chop Restaurant was transformed with sheer billowing teal table cloths and white bubble lanterns above dancing in the ocean’s breeze. Delightful samplings from the Pacific Prime kitchen under the direction of Executive Chef Rick Davidson were a highlight. Including heaps of fresh shellfish tossed in colourful salad, a suckling pig, ceviche shooters and prawn satays. The gentlemen from Qualicum Scallops were frying up their fresh catch with a choice of two sumptuous sauces. Other vendors offered decadent gourmet ravioli and mini fish tacos that had you going back for seconds and thirds.  Wine, bubbling and otherwise, was generously poured from various wineries, both local to the Island and beyond. All the while the lovely ladies from Hot Chocolate in Comox were circulating with precious little cocoa morsels

So there ya go…my little foodie blurb…but honestly, all fluffiness aside, why should YOU go next year? The tickets are reasonable for what is offered but probably not a priority in many food budgets these days. I have spoken to so many long time Nanaimo residents this summer who have said “Wow! You really got around this summer, I’ve lived here all my life and have never been to_________, fill in the blank!” Come on Islanders, that is just sad! After living here one whirlwind year, I can say I have been impressed beyond measure with everything available to us!

For the same price as a movie out and a dinner at one of the many chain restaurants in town, you can dress up like a rock star and head out to Parksville for an incredible evening that will have you thanking your lucky stars that you live here! There are top quality chef’s who get to play with food to impress not only you, but the other talented chefs in attendance, so you are getting a sampling of cutting edge delicious! The vineyards represented are sharing their newest blends right beside their tried and true, you may just find a new favourite. Mingle with people you haven’t had the chance to run into in awhile, whilst you meet the folks that are producing some of the most tremendous food on the island.  Enjoy a genuinely phenomenal time while watching the sun set gloriously over a million dollar view. It’s truly magical and…where else can you have a gorgeous Mermaid pour your Vodka martini out of an ice sculpture? I thought so…don’t miss the chance next year! Don’t worry, I’ll remind you when the tickets go on sale.

that perfect hand...

In Ocean's 11, Danny said that "the house always wins. If you play long enough, never change the stakes, then the house takes you. Unless, when that perfect hand comes along, you bet big... and then, you take the house." Here's the hand I've been dealt, sometimes it's risky and sometimes it's safe, but all the time... it's perfect. It's mine.
